NeuroQuill 🪶
In this project, we merge art and neuroscience.
The concept we present in this work is a way to visualize brain 🧠 (EEG) and heart ❤️ (PPG) metrics in an easy painting format. Each stroke on the canvas can represent different band powers: alpha, beta, gamma, theta, delta or derived metrics like attention, engagement and fatigue backed by existing scientific research for each of them.
Scientists are used to operating in multidimensional spaces; however, the human mind can naturally perceive far fewer dimensions - temporal, spatial, spectral, and so on.
To make this artistic take more interesting we employ fluid dynamics to simulate interaction of the strokes between themselves based on person’s brain signal.
Let’s take, for example, one’s alpha band: it fluctuates between the minimum and maximum values, which we extract during the calibration phase, and then normalize it to get a score from 0 to 100. Same color scales help communicate the difference between the low alpha or high alpha band with a distribution or color, almost like a rainbow 🌈.
Fluid dynamics gives you a sense of the entropy that happens across the brain-generated signals as well.
This artistic representation carries information of the person who places each stroke while wearing a non-invasive BCI band on their head.
The demonstration presented in this work serves as a reminder that signals take shape and form but it is up to human to interpret them.
Your brain makes such decisions for you. Even if you choose not to engage consciously, your subconscious already processes the data and forms initial opinions.
It takes an effort to cognitively “make” your mind about it. And you should.
What we do, is show you your brain state while you are painting, in each of your strokes.
We show you your brain. You interpret it.
